1820

October 8

After collapsing from a stroke in August, which left him paralyzed, King Henri Christophe commits suicide in his palace with  a silver bullet, after being informed of the rebellion of his army. He is buried at the Citadel  bearing his name.  He is remembered as one of the heroes of the independence and the Haitian genius of all time.

October 26

Boyer is acclaimed in the northern city of Cap-Haitien and promulgated the Republic Constitution.

1822

February 9

President Boyer arrives in Santo Domingo and unifies the island of Hispaniola( Haiti and Dominican Republic), which he will govern for 21 years.

1825

April 17

Charles X, King of France, brother of the deceased Louis XVIII, signs an ordinance in which he conditionally recognizes the independence of Haiti. He imposes on the Haitian government an indemnity of 150 million francs that Haiti should pay to France to compensate the French Planters expelled in 1804.

July 3

A squadron of fourteen  ships of war headed by Baron Mackau, delegate of Charles X, arrives at the bay of La Gonave.  Mackau meets with Boyer  and delivers the Ordinance of Charles X.  It will take almost one hundred years for the Haitian government to liquidate this burdensome debt.

1831

September 22  

President Boyer lays the base of Petionville, a city dedicated to Alexandre Petion and, a suburb of Port-au-Prince.

1838

The remaining debt of independence of 120 million francs is reduced to 60 million to be paid in equal installments  to the French government.

1842

May 7

An earthquake shakes the northern region of Haiti and severely damages the Sans-Souci palace and the Citadel Henri Christophe.

1843

March 13

President Boyer is deposed and forced to exile to Paris.

September 18 to December 31

The Constitution of 1843 is formulated by the Constituent Assembly.

  December 31

Charles Herard Aine, also known as Riviere Herard, is appointed President of the Republic of Haiti.
