1991

January 6/7 (night)

An attempted coup-d’etat by Roger Lafontant, a member of the Duvalier group, fails. The 200 year old cathedral of Port-au-Prince is set on fire.  The Archbishop’s house and the residence  of the Nuncio, the Vatican’s Ambassador, are attacked by a mob.

February 7

Jean-Bertrand Aristide is sworn in as President of Haiti for a five-year term in the presence of the National Assembly.

September 30

A military coup against President  Jean-Bertrand Aristide drives him out of Haiti. A provisional government is installed with Joseph C. Nerette, a judge of the Supreme court, as President in accordance with the Article 149 of the Constitution. The Prime Minister appointed by the Parliament is Jean-Jacques Honorat.

October 8

A commercial embargo against Haiti is approved by the thirty-four nations of the Organization of American States.

1992

June 4

A new Prime Minister, Marc Louis Bazin, is elected by the Senate.

June 19

A consent through which Joseph C. Nerette and Prime Minister Jean-Jacques Honorat retire from their functions is approved and signed at the “Villa d’Accueil” by the Provisional Government, the Ministries and the Army.

The new elected Prime Minister, Marc Louis Bazin, officially takes office with the chief mission to continue the negotiations.

1993

July 3

Marc Bazin Resign.
